Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated quartz crystals discovered within exposed outcrops of dolomite in and around Herkimer County, New York and the Mohawk River Valley. They are the clearest quartz crystals in the world 

Many complete facets flash pastel colored rainbows. Rainbows occur during the crystal's formation. Air or water may be captured within a crystal; while veils and internal fractures also mark the crystal's development. Any of these can create rainbows. Some external hydrocarbon (anthraxolite) is present on this C grade Herkimer Diamond.
